Carlilse House
Who are we?
Carlisle House is a residential substance misuse treatment centre situated near the centre of Belfast. It caters for individuals 18-65 years old, from the greater Belfast area and North Antrim. Carlisle House also welcomes private clients. It offers a range of services, advice and information, treatment programmes, and ongoing support services. Carlisle House was established in 1992 by the Board of Social Witness of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland.
Vision Statement
Carlisle House aims to provide the opportunity for individuals who have a substance misuse problem, and their relatives, to begin the journey of recovery through self-awareness and change.
This opportunity is offered within an ethos of acceptance, respect and compassion.
Aims
- To foster an environment of respect, acceptance, honesty and openness.
- To promote a holistic approach incorporating appropriate models of treatment in order to facilitate change.
- To promote service user involvement in the provision of the substance misuse treatment service.
- To demonstrate a commitment to meet professional standards appropriate to the provision of a substance use treatment service.
- To demonstrate an ongoing commitment to the personal development of each staff member.
Treatment Philosophy
At the core of Carlisle House is a commitment to a value of respect, dignity and compassion. The model underpinning our treatment programmes is an integrated model of care, employing a psycho-social approach to therapeutic intervention. A strong emphasis is placed on creating a safe environment that will enable individuals to discover their own solutions to their own problems. Experience has taught us that substance use is often a response to other difficulties therefore it would be an injustice to the individual not to provide the space to explore substance misuse within a social and personal context.
Post Programme Support
Carlisle House recognizes the importance of support and therapeutic intervention post Programme. A variety of weekly supports are available. To access these the individual must first have completed the Residential Treatment Programme.
Ex-resident support group
The ex-resident support group meets weekly and offers peer support within a safe context. A member of staff facilitates this group.

This support group permits those with drug problems the opportunity to share issues specific to themselves within a safe and secure environment. This tends to be a smaller group and thus permits more personal and therapeutic sharing.

If you do not wish to continue, counseling, individual reviews offer support on a monthly basis.
Self help support group
Friends of Carlisle House is a self help group, established by ex-residents, that offers support within a social context. This group meets twice weekly and organises numerous events throughout the year.

Relatives Support group
This group is open to all and provides the opportunity to talk about the impact of someone else’s substance misuse problem on your life. This group is facilitated by a staff member and meets each Tuesday at 7pm.
Family Support Days
These provide the opportunity for those who have relatives in the Residential Therapeutic Treatment Programme to meet with residents and discuss various aspects of substance misuse, and to begin to rebuild trust and openness. These groups meet every fortnight.
